Just because my last race was 2 months ago, doesn't mean that I haven't been busy during the summer. Recently, I attended the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. If you aren't familiar with the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, it is an event where historic automobiles gather to race on track, and spectators come to see vintage automobiles and former F1 and sportscar drivers. Think of it as a living museum for vintage racing.
I got to spend the two day event with USF2000 driver Dakota Dickerson & F4 USA driver Skylar Robinson. The first thing we checked out was a Q&A panel with former F1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart and current F1 commentator and former racer David Hobbs. It was inspiring listening to their stories from their F1 days. They discussed safety, the U.S Grand Prix, their favorite cars, and the current state of F1. It was an awesome experience listening to those two legends.
After checking out the panel, we went around the paddock checking out some of the cars. The great thing about being at such a prestigious event is that professional drivers are always walking around the garages. I got to meet two of the best. First, I ran into 3-time Indy 500 winner & 4 time Indycar champion Dario Franchitti. He is one of my favorite open wheel drivers of all time, so it was pretty great meeting him. After I met Dario, I got to see Scott Pruett. This is my second time meeting Scott. The last time I met Scott was back in 2012. He is a really nice and friendly guy. Scott was there to promote the new Lexus sportscar he will be driving.
The highlight of the weekend was seeing the old F1 cars on track. If you are a racing fan, you know that these cars are some of the greatest cars in the history of motorsports. Legends like Andretti, Lauda, and Senna droves these cars. I have never heard a car make that much noise in my life. As they passed us each lap, I could feel the ground shake. It was an awesome sight to witness. It was by far the coolest moment of the weekend.
As summer comes to a close, it's now time to focus on Sonoma. I've been dying to get back into the race car for awhile now. Rounds 11 & 12 will be at Sonoma Raceway on September 16th - 18th. We will be racing alongside the Verizon Indycar Series. I'll keep you all posted!
Until next time
